Field Settings: Hook, Line and Sinker

Hook, line and sinker: literally.

Using a "leg theory" approach, and the English desire to win by hooking, Dhoni won the 2nd Test against England.

Could it work for you too?

I'm going to say yes.

In certain situations, you can use a similar tactic. It's risky, but Dhoni and Sharma proved that it can win you games when orthodox tactics are seeing you cruise to defeat.

Lets look at the details.

Good Enough for Dhoni: 4 More Village Tactics to Try

In the 2nd Test against England, Dhoni stood back to the spinner.

But there was a method in the madness.

Cricket Show 270: Competition Winner

This week's winner of the Cricket Show podcast question competition is Cameron. He wins a free coaching course from PitchVision Academy.

The winning question was:

I am a 13 year old leg spinner who doesn't spin the ball when bowling at a faster pace than usual. I try to spin the ball whilst bowling faster, but it doesn't really spin as much as it does when I bowl my stock speed which is around 33-35 mph. I don't understand why it isn't spinning if all I am doing to make the ball go quicker is move pull my front arm down quicker. Can you please help as to why this happens and give a possible reason for it?"

Listen to the panels answer to his question here.

Plus your mailbag questions are answered. This week the audio roundtable is about pace against spin for a leg spinner, and what to do if you keep missing straight ones.

Quick Tip: Play Funky Shots

Filed in:

The classic image of the coach is telling the batsman to "keep your elbow up and play straight". It's good advice, but it's time to change.

Young players love to emulate their heroes; even older players do. So why restrict yourself? Give it a go.

Of course, if you do nothing but play switch hits you will be an ineffective batsman. Even KP picks his moments. But you can learn, play and enjoy new fangled shots.

As long as you do it in context.
