CRICKET COACHES: PART-TIME

The Portsmouth Grammar School has two vacancies for qualified, talented and enthusiastic cricket coaches to become part of a well-respected cricket coaching team within the Senior School. During term times you will coach cricket during the school day and at after-school clubs as well as leading school teams at weekend fixtures. We can offer some flexibility regarding the number of hours you work (approx. 8-12 hours per week) but you will also be required to work flexibly, including evenings and Saturdays, to support the school’s busy sporting calendar. Fixtures take place both at our PGS sports ground in Hilsea, Portsmouth, and across the region at other schools on our fixtures list.

The coach (c) hits the ball (in the air or on the ground) to any fielder then shouts which end the ball should be returned to. If the shy is at the bowlers end the other fielders must back up the throw and return it to the coach.

We had a great question come in on the Cricket Show from Basit, who talked about his lack of confidence to get behind the ball when it's aimed short pitched and at the body. He felt that he was taking too many balls on the body. This often comes from a lack of confidence through a player believing that they have not got the skills to attack or cope with the incoming delivery.

It is then the coaches' responsibility to build both confidence and competence through a series of drills.

Mark Garaway in the West Indies and joins Sam Lavery with David Hinchliffe shivvering in the UK spring to talk cricket. David has a new coach to work with and opens up the team to discuss the relationships between a coach, assistant coaches and captains.
