Quick Tip: How to Play Hard and Conserve Energy
Someone has a big challenge to overcome, so they emailed in,
"I've got some cricket championships coming up, they're 50 over games played over 5 days. I'm a batting all-rounder, and I bowl leg-spin and batting around 5. What is the best way for me to play hard, but also conserve my energy for the week?"
It's hard to say for sure because we don't know a lot of stuff (how old he is, how many games, how fit he is) but lets lay down some general guidelines.
- Put it out of your mind. You don't want to worry about saving energy for the next game during a current game. So play as hard as you can when you are in the action.
- Stretch and roll. Warm up well before the game then do a full coll-down, static stretch and foam roll afterwards.
- Eat. Nutrients are all important, especially right after play. Make sure you get in plenty of nutrient rich food like fruit, veggies, lean meats, potato, rice and nuts. Omega 3 from oil or fish is important. Avoid junk. This will take some planning.
- Sleep. Sleep is the ultimate recovery tool. Get as much as you can, especially before midnight.
- Focus on clear outcomes. Mental tiredness will also put you off your game. Help to ward this off by staying focused on your game plan, be it batting, bowling or fielding
No matter what you do, you will lose both mental and physical energy as the championship goes on. Learning to maximise what you have physically and to dig deep into the mental well is part of the process of becoming a cricketer.

Play hard in each game, just make sure you wind down straight after the game, eat sensibly and get plenty of sleep. Make sure you warm up before each game as you don't want to be playing on a pulled muscle.
If you're young and fit you should be able to play cricket every day virtually indefinitely.
