"I am a keen slow left arm bowler. When I bowl the ball the delivery has an element of under-spin (back-spin). What is frustrating is that I am trying to release the ball with an element of top-spin. At times I am sure the ball is being released with top-spin on it, but looking at the way the ball is spinning in the air (using red/white balls) it has back-spin. Have you seen this type of issue before? A cricket coach suggested to me that I suffer from a common off-spinner's undercutter issue, but to me this means the ball would be spinning tilted back like a UFO when this is not clearly happening. My goal is to bowl the ball at a 45 degree angle with a combination of side and top-spin."

This is the first series of troubleshooting to repair inefficient or physically dangerous fast bowling technique.

The bowling action is complex and prone to breaking down. While we want bowler's to bowl with natural actions, in many cases when we see a flaw we will be quick to try to iron out. This is because injury, and reduction in pace and performance is often associated with the flaw.

One of the most common of these flaws is; as a bowler comes out of her bound and into her back foot contact (BFC). We often see the back leg sweeping underneath the body and then land in a position towards the return crease. As the action is a chain of events only one thing can happen: A misalignment between BFC and front foot contact (FFC).

How many players over the years have had success with unorthodox techniques?

It would be easier to list those who have been top players and been totally orthodox! That's because the human body is tremendously variable between people. We move differently. We think differently.

On top of this variation is the opinions of the different coaches you will experience as you play. Everyone likes to have a say from club and school coach to parent and even higher levels. There are many coaches at different levels of skill with many ideas on how to help you.

The only way to unpick all that is to be your own coaching manual.
