Cricket Show 301: Competition Winner

Filed in:

This week's winner of the Cricket Show podcast question competition is Mark. He wins a free coaching course from PitchVision Academy.

The winning question was,

"I am a coach and love baseball, I think we can learn a lot from the game and know that lots of throwing coaches now work with cricketers. I have watched my fair share of baseball throwing mechanics and drills and my question is about arm slots. In baseball, players all have different throwing techniques. Many videos talk about the throwers 'arm slots' varying from vertical to horizontal. What is arm slots all about? I hope you can help answer this, throwing is an art and most cricketers I see have custard arms, which is a little embarrassing considering it's a skill used as much as batting, bowling and catching."

Listen to the panels answer to his question here.

Video: Graham Gooch on England at the 2015 World Cup

Filed in:

Recently, I went to Chelmsford, home of Essex County Cricket Club, to catch up with Graham Gooch. The first topic of conversation was, of course, England's dramatic World Cup failure.

In the video, Graham discusses what went wrong, what needs to be done to fix the problem and how the modern game is as much about batting without fear as it is about building a platform.

Watch the video and let me know what you think.

Quick Tip: How to Coach Passion, Pride and Enjoyment

Filed in:

Passion, honesty, pride and enjoyment. These are common aspirations for cricket clubs. Can they be coached?

It sounds like they are lofty dreams, but they all have a practical component. And that means, I argue, that they can be coached.

The key is making the dream a goal. First you define what these terms really mean, then you agree how you will get there. Simple. It just requires a conversation.

Wicketkeeper Standing Back Drill

This is a cracking drill for wicket keepers standing back using equipment that is becoming commonplace within coaching kitbags around the world.

We are presently in a "specific preparation phase" of the programme, so much of the aim of our sessions are build volume into both keepers "catch" and to free up the movement patterns to both right and left handed batters.

The session was for two keepers. They swapped every six balls to simulate overs. We ran the session in a confined net area so I ensured that we maximised the width of the area so the keepers could move freely for offside takes and for simulated outside edges. It's just as easy to run outdoors or in the open, or both.

You can use a Sidearm, bowling machine or bowlers for the drill.
