One of Bob Woolmer's batting drills was the one-legged drive which I featured right at the start of the Coaching to Win series.

This gem of a drill helps players who lead their forward movement to the ball with their heads. (Not your Pietersen, Amla or Gayle who lead with their feet but more like the Bell, Ponting and Strauss).

Bob would ask the batter to not move their feet, yet wait for the fuller ball to bounce and move their head towards the line of the ball.

What does this drill develop?

Here is a thoughtful question from Dave,

"Several of the articles here talk about using the spinner as an attacking option in order to take wickets and win the game, but with win/lose cricket you don't have to take all ten wickets to win. Is there going to become more emphasis on defensive bowling, and will this make the life of the slow bowler even more difficult?"

Challow & Childrey Cricket Club operates 3 Senior Men’s Saturday League teams in the Cherwell Cricket League.

One of the key long term objectives of Challow & Childrey Cricket Club is to develop and maintain successful senior cricket teams particularly at 1st team level and we have identified that an ECB level 2 or higher qualified coach (who may still be a player) is a requirement for the 2014 season, and possibly beyond. The successful candidate will have experience in league cricket, and will be required to lead weekly training sessions and be with the 1st Team on matchdays. Part of the role will also be to assist with the development of our talented young players, including their integration into Senior Teams.

The chosen candidate will provide leadership in all formats of the game, and in conjunction with the Club’s Captains, Cricket Committee and players, will promote the highest standards of behaviour and discipline. The post holder exercises this role in close consultation and partnership with the 1st Team Captain who leads the Players on the field, and the Selection Group in order to develop and deliver policies to create sustainable success.

"My college game is about a week from now and I am a bit worried about having a bowling plan if we defend a target. Here's a sample match situation: The target's around 130 to 150 in 30 overs. Its a slow pitch with low bounce. There are 6 medium pacers and two off spinners (with part-timers, of course). Bowler's limit is of 6 overs. 2 medium pacers are also good at the death. Would you help me out with a detailed plan?"

"I play in KSCA IV Division League, Karnataka, India. While wicket keeping for an off-spinner, many a time, a vicious turner goes through the gap between the bat and pad of the right handed batsman. And those are the one's I tend to mis-collect or totally miss (especially if there's extra bounce) as I lose sight of the ball. Similarly, if the batsman shuffles across to the offside to play a sweep or reverse sweep, he again blocks my view making it hard to collect in case he misses the ball. How do I solve this problem? Any specific drills I can try out?"
